Spanish Moss

The tree is at the Penn Center, in Frogmore, which is near Beaufort, South Carolina. (Turns out Beaufort is pronounced "bew-fert," with the first syllable being like beau- in "beautiful," not beau- in beaux arts.) Martin Luther King was one of many who came to Penn Center and the immediate environs, on one occasion using a retreat there to compose his "I Have a Dream" speech. (This is hearsay. Don't quote me without double-checking.) The area was known before the Civil War as an area where runaway slaves could go to avoid being chased by their owners, who didn't think it was worth combing the swamps to find their "property."
